		<description>Indeed, a pinch of salt was taken. I can't help but be cautiously optimistic though--as we've seen in Soviet history, it took only the death of Stalin for the Stalinist era to end. A totalitarian system built on a cult of personality can't last much past the lifetime of that personality! Remember, right after the death of Stalin all the old posters and fears and gulags were still in place, but after a little while, the whole stinking edifice just fell in on itself, helped of course by Khrushchev and the Secret Speech. Now, I know Khrushchev was no democrat, but I'd much rather have a Khrushchev than a Stalin in Turkmenistan, and I cautiously believe that may be where things are heading.</description>

My position towards such remarks is, cynically perhaps, not to wonder what they would mean if they were true, but to speculate on what caused him to make them in the first place. Probably the same reason that Niyazov used to constantly speak about the importance of democracy.</description>
