[...] neweurasia’s Turkmenistan blog, one of the few stops in the blogosphere for well-informed comment on Turkmenistan, points out that Turkmenbashi’s date of death is surely false in a lengthy and informative post on Niazov’s death and the roles that Turkmenbashi’s legitimate and rumored-to-be illegitimate family may play in the chaos some think is coming. The same blog continues to cover events as they unfold. Peter covers two new big developments, one of which could leave Turkmenistan a much poorer country. Turkmenistan expert and Vremya Novostei correspondent Arkady Dubnov gave a press conference at the RIA-Novosti press agency in which he revealed that according to information in his possession, close Saparmurat Niyazov confindante and treasurer Alexander Zhadan went missing the day before Niyazov’s death. … Dubnov claims that Zhadan has control over all Niyazov’s financial dealings. A combination of this and the possible billions salted away in Western bank accounts may mean that Turkmenistan is a considerably poorer country today. [...]

Well, interesting news...especially the one with the bastard son alias Berdymukhammedov... I as well disagree with the poison version. There were not so many people easily getting in contact with him and, even if nobody stated publicly his heart problems, many expected a sudden death. Hopefully, this will be a smooth transition, but actually I don't expect the one to more democratic rule.

It is a remote possibility that he was bumped off, but it sees just that; implausible. The immediate beneficiaries of Niyazov's death at the moment were doing pretty ok under him, so it does not add up.
Please keep watching this spot, however, as the post-Niyazov analysis will keep coming in drips and drabs. My current thesis (and I am sticking my neck out here) is that contrary to all the power struggle talk happening at the moment, this will be a fairly smooth transition. To what is another matter.

Thanks for the great summary Peter.

Let's not forget that he had an illegitimate son too. Not that this matters much, but I've heard some argue that this son may go for a power play.

Also, word among some Turkmens in the US is that he was poisoned. They think that he was in excellent health.

[...] If you’re keeping track of the guessing game, let me recommend Nathan Hamm’s Registan, which is already all over the story. New Eurasia also covers the country - they offer the intriguing speculation that Niyazov has been dead for several days and that a political activist was arrested to prevent him from spreading the news to Moscow. The post also includes an ominous warning about the possible disintegration of the state after Niyazov’s death: “The population will not cheer the passing of a despot, but they may come to mourn the passing of a deeply compromised stability.” [...]
