Both Watan and News Central Asia carry the story of Wednesday’s visit to Turkmenistan of Iranian Foreign minister, Manucher Mottaki. The main areas of discussion were cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector and settlement of Caspian question. According to News Central Asia:

The sides discussed prospects for participation of Iranian companies in the reconstruction of Seyidi refinery and polyethylene plant. The Iranian foreign minister emphasized that his country was ready to increase the import of liquefied gas from Turkmenistan. Niyazov agreed that economic interaction was one of the priority areas of bilateral relations. He pointed out that mutual trade turnover had already exceeded US $ one billion and there was ample scope for growth. Niyazov said that the Dostluk dam, that straddles the border of both the countries and harnesses the waters of Murghab River, was a bright example of mutual cooperation. Regarding the Caspian question, the sides agreed that some issues needed to be addressed and confirmed their commitment to reach a settlement that should safeguard the interests of all the littoral states.

Mottaki also brought greetings from the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, to Niyazov, and a letter inviting him to an official visit to Iran.
